I'll read this asap. 'The Blank Slate', where I believe Pinker started this argument, I found surprisingly nuanced and engaging. And while I've yet to read this latest installment, my experience of analyzing Pinker's arguments in-depth left me with a definite cautionary attitude to his logic on this issue. Please see 'War & the Noble Savage' if you're interested! Maybe when I read 'Better Angels' I'll write a brief summary of my ideas, updated to respond to this. It'll be interesting to see if he's plugged any holes in his thinking.

But if he's still saying, "Now is less violent than any other time in human history", I'm afraid he's probably still propagandizing for the status quo. Because for the opening 94% of our story, there isn't enough evidence to be conclusive about the matter. And the evidence we do have seems to give good (if not conclusive) support to the idea that "primitive" humans lived in a less violent climate than we do. Things certainly got a lot worse after we started settling down and farming; and we've certainly improved since then. But that's a more complex picture than Pinker's painting.

It gives me hope that the kind of polyphonic or contrapuntal thinking that I am attempting to practice and score and teach with my Said Symphony -- and which I believe is central both to the understanding of complex problems and to conflict resolution / peacemaking -- will in fact be something that humans can learn.

And if I didn't already have a magnificent board for that endeavor, Tom Johnson's "Syncopated Texture" which you use as your illustration would have fitted the bill extraordinarily well.

I just posted a comment on your Corbin blog. Noticing your connection to the Temenos Academy prompts me to add a few more lines. (My one encounter with the Academy was attending Alan Garner's 'By Seven Firs and Goldenstone' lecture in 2007, but that evening led to all kinds of things.)

Anyway, besides his writings, Illich's other legacy is the extraordinary network of thinkers who spent time in the oases of conviviality he created, first at CIDOC in Cuernavaca, and then on the edge of the campuses on which he taught in later years. For example, David Abram spent a year living in Illich's household at Penn State. Tom, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your talks at Rewley House on Oct.9th. I am the older American who handed you a glass of cold water in the coffee line (and took away your empty coffee cup later). My wife and I are retired teachers living in Oxford and we have read a fair amount of Jung and Hillman and have discovered Corbin during the last few years. Re: projection: your reference to Jungian ideas of projection led me to dig out this, a favourite description by Jung of projection in "Aspects of the Masculine", specifically "The Personification of the Opposites":

"Properly understood, projection is not a voluntary happening; it is something that approaches the conscious mind from "outside," a kind of sheen on the object, while all the time the subject remains unaware that he himself is the source of light which causes the cat's eye of the projection to shine."

Do you know of the 'children's writer' Alan Garner (whose books 'The Weirdstone of Brisingamen' and 'The Owl Service' made a huge impression on me as a child)? He was born in Cheshire in 1934 and has lived in the area all his life. He narrowly escaped death as a child when he contracted, in succession, diptheria, meningitis and pneumonia. In his collection of essays and lectures entitled "The Voice That Thunders" he writes:

"Everywhere is special, in some way. It was not imperative that I should be born in Cheshire; but it was imperative that I should know my place. This can be achieved only by inheriting one's childhood landscape, and by growing in it to maturity. It is a subtle matter of owning and being owned. (in "The Edge of the Ceiling" - the view from his bed during his many months of childhood convalescence).

He also wrote a beautiful series of short stories collected as 'The Stone Quartet' that chart the procession of several generations of stonemasons (his real-life stone wall making grandfather was a key figure). Just the other day I was in Yorkshire visiting the medieval church of St Oswald's in Lythe (restored to it's ancient magnificence in the early 20th century having been turned into an ornate parlour by the early Victorians) and saw a photo of the stone masons topping out the stone spire, the workmen dressed in their waistcoats, moleskin trousers and bowler hats. Such elegance!

I think there is a third argument here
While we have experts on the problem. It does not appear there are experts with the solutions.
Taxing seems to be historically a bad model from preventing anything. Gasoline tax has not diminish consumption.
Those at the bottom might suffer the most.
But if i cannot afford solar panels now, how will taxing make me more affordable?
Who gets this money? who decided they will get this money and why are they an faceless body. What happens if they become corrupt and use it for there own power. What recourse is put i place?
Why are there not scientists on this panel?
If the problem to a huge effect is due to deforestation, no amount of control will cause the CO2 to be absorbed.

Charles thinks for introducing the Tutor/Mentor Connection to Tom. Tom's maps show how we can use maps to understand the distribution of business locations, in relation to where more might be needed, e.g. the "food deserts".

We're hoping companies will use maps to not only plot store locations, but to build community engagement strategies that use company resources (people, jobs, technology, dollars, advertising, etc.) to support programs in the area where companies do business that help reduce poverty by helping kids expand their learning and work opportunities.

Such strategies benefit the company and their employees, as much as the neighborhood if they are fully developed and supported from top levels of the company.

I do quite a bit of friendship-work with Dan Bassill of Tutor/Mentor Connection, and his uses of mapping for social benefit are very impressive.
